East Coast Mafia: Gangster Squad
Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD's efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), the movie is written by Will Beall (Lethal Weapon 5, Justice League, Castle) and is based on Paul Lieberman's series of articles entitled "Tales from the Gangster Squad". Starring Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Academy Award winner Sean Penn, joining Fleischer behind the scenes are the director's regular collaborators, production designer Maher Ahmad and editor Alan Baumgarten, as well as Academy Award-winning director of photography Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha) and Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres (True Grit). "Gangster Squad is a huge, huge opportunity that I want to take in order to deliver what will hopefully be an iconic gangster movie," said Fleischer in an interview with Collider. "The movie is set in 1949 Los Angeles. So it's a gangster movie period and it's got those classic, beautiful 1940's cars and tommy guns and those classic gangster tropes. But I think part of the reason I got the job was because of the action in Zombieland. There is quite a bit of action in Gangster Squad so I think it's really fun to find a balance between these classic gangster movies and, you know, whatever my approach to the action in the film will be."

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop... except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara and Jerry Wooters, who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.
