Life in the flesh: Rust & Bone
After winning the Grand Jury Prize with A Prophet, Jacques Audiard is back to compete with his feature Rust & Bone (De rouille et d'os) in 2012 Cannes Film Festival starring Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. Written by Audiard with Thomas Bidegain, the movie is a very free adaptation of two short stories by Canadian writer and amateur boxer Craig Davidson. It is easy to see why Jacques Audiard was so keen to base a film on it: Davidson's prose is precise and carnal. It conjures up images, a brutality tempered by harmony, a darkness broken by frequent recourse to the absurd or to irony. And, above all, Davidson delivers characters who lead "Life in the Flesh" (the title of one of his short stories); outcasts who fight against the fate befalling them. "Ali and Stéphanie are characters from times of crisis, from a society that has become slightly barbaric, where people eat from the rubbish," said Audiard. "There is nothing left to sell but bodies and violence. And the character played by Matthias has no words, he has physical strength. I have a problem with filming violence: I hate it, but I always come back to it. The plan was for it to be as realistic as possible, but not too gory, because the female character was watching it. She admires courage, but doesn't like violence that much."

After diffusing a fight one evening, he meets Stephanie a beautiful, self-confident woman. He takes her home and leaves her his number. But she is a princess and he is a poor fellow. Stephanie is a killer whale trainer at the local Marineland. After a terrible accident one day, Ali gets an unexpected phone call from Stephanie.
