The movie premiered Wednesday as part of its international debut and is already breaking records. Disney’s The Avengers, based on Marvel Comics, has not even arrived in U.S. (due there on May 4th), yet made $8 million total on opening day in the three countries where it premiered.

In Australia it had the second highest opening ever with $6 million (after the final Harry Potter movie, which had opened with $7 million). The Avengers also debuted in Taiwan with $1.2 million (their highest opening day in 2012) and New Zealand with $700K.

The film had the highest opening day for any Disney film and was also the second highest opening ever for a Marvel movie (after Spiderman 3), which opened on a holiday.

The Avengers has an all-star cast and is directed by Joss Whedon. It is available in Digital 3D, RealD and IMAX 3D. It appears that bringing so many well-known Marvel comic characters together has paid off for everyone!
